After looking through the Aligator I found a story titled: "UF Sailing Team's Equipment damaged by High Winds", which grabbed my attention. Link below this paragraph. Over the winter holiday, high winds totaled most of the vessels that the UF Sailing team had and left the remainder with damaged masts. The UF Sailing Team needs all new vessels to be able to compete this year and go to nationals like they are planning, but this could cost around $100,000.
Another article that I found interesting was: "Future of Gainesville Lucky’s Market remains unclear." Link below. Here it is discussed that a supermarket will be closing with rumors that Aldi's will be buying the store, while all of the employees are currently searching for jobs in the city. With the loss of the store, its associates are trying to get jobs in the competitive metropolitan area while it is unclear if more jobs will be made readily available with the opening of another store.
"UF Health monitors rumors of coronavirus spreading to Gainesville" was another headline that caught my attention. Link Below. Here it talks about how the UF affiliates might have come into contact with the coronavirus. While there are currently no confirmed cases of the virus in Gainesville, the Chinese association on campus is having to postpone events out of fear of an outbreak.
One story that concerns me is "UF student dies days after being struck by vehicle," because it happened on campus. Link below. It says she was crossing a street in east Gainesville around 8 pm. This shows that Gainesville drivers can be irresponsible and put the pedestrians at risk. This an issue that every student who crosses a street on and near campus needs to be aware of at all times.
In this last article, "GPD continues use of highly-criticized facial recognition program," we can see that the Gainesville Police Department is using a program to help identify individuals through advanced searches that some would say are an invasion of privacy. The GDP is taking some heat for their decision but they are helping other Police departments with their searches and claims to have plenty of security so that no unauthorized searches can be made by the deparment. Link below.
Hey Ethan,
ReplyDeleteI think you analyzed the articles thoroughly; You hit all the points that the instructions look for. So good job on that! I also wrote about Gainesville's Lucky's Market. I was astonished to hear that they are closing down. It's sad that the owner of the store didn't even know that he was bought out. I think they should've used better communication.

Ethan,
ReplyDeleteYour post appears to have adequately answered the questions required for the articles. While I did not write on Gainesville's happenings, I do enjoy the articles you chose as I just spoke to my roommates about third one you presented.
I actually have a humorous anecdote based on the conversation I had with my roommates after the email sent by UF. This resulted in a poorly understood belief about the content of the email and coupled with my weeklong illness, I truly believed that I had the coronavirus. Upon actually reading the email the following day and a number of articles after that, I finally was able to laugh at my own momentary delusion. So, I thank you for the humorous reminder.
Respectfully, Maeghan Solanki
Hey Ethan,
ReplyDeleteThis was a very well written response and analysis of the articles. You hit all points required and did a very good job completing the assignment. The news about the sailing team is awful. It's crazy to hear that bad whether caused extensive damage hear because I'm not particularly used to it. I hope they find a way to repair the damages and get back to sailing soon.
Hi Ethan,
ReplyDeleteYour Gainesville stories are quite interesting and a bit shocking. The news about the UF student being struck is honestly concerning and should have more coverage and reaction from the public. I think many people can attest to the fact that they have almost been struck by a speeding vehicle, it is so terrible that something like this happened so close to us. Great job describing each article.
Ethan,
ReplyDeleteThe last article you wrote about is very familiar to me. This is something the Tampa police department also tried to do. While I believe that many measures should be put into place to make sure you actually found your Your culprit, I don’t necessarily think this is an invasion of privacy. Seeing as how these cameras are in public places I think it’s the police departments right to be able to use it. But I also believe public places should be limited to the streets only, like not inside buildings, because that’s even I think it passes the invasion of privacy realm.
